LANSING, MICH. (WILX) - Lansing School Superintendent Yvonne Caamul Canul was at Eastern High School today to greet students on their first day of school.
Today was the second to last first day of school at Eastern High School which will move to where Pattengill Middle School currently resides in the fall of 2019.
Caamul Canul spoke about some of the changes in the district such as the district wide school choice that allows students to go to any school they want to within the district regardless of where they live.
"We decided that if a family's choosing to go to a neighboring school district one of the ones around Lansing why wouldn't they choose to go to a school within the Lansing school district and we'll get them there", said Caamul Canul.
Another program in the district this year is the Pathway Promise and that helps students to identify what their passionate about and then to select the school that allows them to pursue that pathway.
Students interested in things like stem, steam, and skilled trades can go to Sexton High School.
Students interested in Biotechnology and International Baccalaureate can go to Eastern High School.
Students interested in new tech and visual and performing arts can go to Everett High School.
Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero says the Pathway Promise is a good program to help students choose a career path.
"Many of them will go to college but some won't and for those who don't go to college there are great opportunities in the trades in getting a certification, in going to nursing school, in going to LCC, in going to the workforce soon".
