Gymnast McKayla Maroney says she was molested by Dr. Nassar

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Wednesday morning on Twitter, McKayla Maroney publicly announced that she was sexually assaulted by Dr. Larry Nassar. She says the #MeToo movement is what made her speak out.
She writes, "I was molested by Dr. Larry Nassar, the team doctor for the US Women's National Gymnastics Team, and Olympic Team."

Dr. Larry Nassar has pleaded guilty to federal child pornography charges and is awaiting sentencing.

“I had a dream to go to the Olympics, and the things that I had to endure to get there were unnecessary and disgusting,” Maroney wrote on her post.

TIME magazine is reporting that Maroney is the highest profile gymnast yet to come forward in the Nassar abuse case. Nassar was the team doctor for USA Gymnastics from 1996 to 2015. He is set to stand trial for sexually assaulting nine girls, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

The #MeToo hashtag has been tweeted multiple times in the last few days after actress Alyssa Milano called for people affected by sexual harassment to speak out in solidarity after the Harvey Weinstein revelations.
