UPDATE: A firefighter was not injured after falling through the floor while battling a fire at a town-home.
It happened around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 4400 block of Seaway Drive in Lansing. Firefighters say the fire started on the first floor.
It was able to spread to the second because of lack of accessible water. The fire hydrants in the area were frozen.
The firefighter went through the second floor but not all the way. He was able to catch himself on the floor joist and get himself out of the situation. He was only taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
As far as the frozen hydrant goes - firefighters say it's not too uncommon. The Board of the Water and Light was contacted and the hydrants tagged. (Two were frozen at the scene.) They told News 10 that what freezes is an underground valve that is below frost level.
