MASON, Mich. (WILX) -- Ingham County Animal Control is making special arrangements for pets in their care to have homes for the holidays.
Each year from the week before Christmas to the week after New Year’s, they send their adoptable pets into foster homes.
Since the shelter is closed on 12/22, 12/25, 12/29 and 1/1, opportunities are limited for these pets to find their forever home while staying at the shelter.
The pets that go to temporary foster homes tend to have a leg up on other animals at the shelter.
“Fostered pets often have an advantage to pets at the shelter.” Said Outreach Manager Kate Turner. “After a pet has been in a foster home, they are able to really come out of their shell. Plus, the foster parent gets to know them and identify the best kind of home for the pet, and what the pets best qualities are. That way we can promote a house trained dog, or a cat that loves chasing a laser pointer.”
The pets at those homes tend to meet other family members, friends and neighbors who may fall in love with them and may adopt them.
Animals will leave for their foster homes December 18th-21st. The return dates are scheduled between January 2nd-5th.
If you think you and your family are able to host a foster pet over the holiday season, contact Kate Turner at 517-676-8318, or email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Fifteen days in a home can make a lifetime of difference to an adoptable pet in need. Supplies are available on an as-needed basis, and all pets are up to date on medical care.
All foster homes are subject to normal approval procedures and restrictions including an application, interview, and proof of landlord permission for renters. All pets are available on a first come, first served basis and all pets adopted from the Ingham County Animal Shelter are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
