MIAMI (NBC) - The Miami Dolphins released linebacker Rey Maualuga following his arrest in Miami overnight.
Sources say the 30-year-old veteran linebacker was booked into the Turner Guildford Knight Correction Center early Saturday morning on a battery charge.
The circumstances surrounding Maualuga's arrest remain unclear.
The team announced its decision to waive Maualuga without comment on the legal situation, saying they were promoting running back De'veon Smith from the practice squad to take his roster spot.
The Dolphins signed the veteran to a one-year deal in August after he played eight years for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Maualuga had 23 tackles for the Dolphins this season in six games, four of them being starts.
