It's election day 2011! Thought I'd again try and LIVE blog this baby as the day goes on to take you guys behind the scenes at how the news biz works on one of its busiest nights.
3:15 pm - It starts with the afternoon news meeting. We have some reporters covering some races. Not going to tell you who and which ones just yet, because I don't want to tip off the competition on our battle plan.
4:06 pm - Making calls to the specific vote counters in counties where they aren't counting ballots til tomorrow. Gotta know who wins the St. Johns City Commission race tonight!
4:51 pm - Bit my tongue-- HARD-- while talking to the Laingsburg City receptionist. I finished the call... I'm a hockey player.
5:10 pm - Just now getting my story for the 6 written. Producer Kaci is starting to get visibly worried.
5:50 pm - Election talk stops in favor of discussing the death of Heavy D., which leads to another discussion of if he had other hits besides "Now That We've Found Love."
6:01 pm - Election previews begin on News 10 at 6.
6:03 pm - It's discovered the boss is NOT ordering in pizza for the staff. Shock and awe has overtaken the newsroom.
6:19 pm - Discussions of other dinner options begins.
7:28 pm - Executive Producer Jeff and I return from QDoba. Double points Tuesday!
8:00 pm - Polls close.
8:01 pm - Overheard in the newsroom: "The polls are closed and you all are just sitting there."
8:06 pm - Calls to precincts and polling places begin... by me.
9:33 pm - Lots of results updates... and I need about 6 more people to keep up!!!
10:09 pm - Finally delegating a little to Gordon the news assistant. Being in charge of social media just ain't fair. Almost as annoying as trying to keep up with Ovid-Elsie schools over 3 counties and 422 townships! Still haven't even read one thing in the show.
10:10 pm - BTW big winners are Carol Wood, Derreck Quinney, Jody Washington, Martin Griffin (Jax Mayor), Dave Hudgens, and the Public Safety Millage PASSES.
10:51 pm - Finished reading the show scripts and double-checking the numbers. Would kill to have Ovid Township numbers for that millage, but I'll have to live without and be comforted by the fact that I've already been informing people as fast as possible via the internet. Facebook, twitter and this blog... WHEW! Let's do the news!
10:52 pm - EP Jeff is confounded by the fact that some people voted in one millage and not the other in some communities. Did they not see it? Were they stymied by the language? Or just get tired after the first one?
11:34 pm - Another election night is in the books. Kudos has been offered all-around as the show went fantastic, except for two fullscreens not showing up off the top. It's fun working with another anchor again, and gotta tell ya-- DA is a pro. We've done a few election nights together and this was the best. His calmness under pressure and experience has finally rubbed off.
Now maybe I'll use this blog as a push to start blogging more often again!
