Not that this will matter to most, but this is not a political rant. I don't write about political things, because as a journalist, I need to appear to be impartial. But the crusade to stop Obama from giving a speech to students on the first day of school is absolute madness. He is the president. What do you think he's going to say?
The speech was actually released on Monday and he's going to talk about paying attention in school. Paying attention in school. I don't remember what President Reagan talked about when he talked to kids but I remember thinking it was pretty cool. The president was talking to us! He could have told us the benefits of democracy and why we're spending trillions to fight a cold war, but I wouldn't have known. Bush 41 talked to kids. Bush 43 was in a classroom on 9/11. Name the worst president in history and I would hope he talked to kids. The president should talk to school kids as much as possible. He's the leader of our nation. You know, the one that's indivisible.
Today I had two conversations about Obama being shut out from certain districts-- including my kids', where they are taping the address and deciding whether to show it at a later date. One conversation went this way.
Me: Why do Reagan and Bush 41 get to talk to the mass of students, but Obama doesn't?
Friend: Because they weren't spreading socialism.
Me: He's the president. He's going to talk about paying attention in school. He's talking to students.
Friend: That's the way Hitler did it.
Another conversation was with a friend who's wife teaches in a district South of Lansing. He told me his wife was talking to teachers who were against it and she asked them why they were so worried. What did they think he was going to say?
They said they didn't want him talking to their students because he was going to talk about masturbation.
Hitler and masturbation.
I am absolutely flummoxed, embarrassed and irate all at the same time. I've attached a link to the text of the speech that I challenge anyone to find anything you wouldn't want you child to hear from the leader of the free world.
There's also a good blog I will link to at the end of this that goes to the heart of what everyone is thinking right now. Slowly but surely the racism everyone is trying so hard to hide by the fact their president is black, is bubbling toward the surface. Health care and stimulus are one thing, but birth certificates and not wanting your kids to be subjected to this man is akin to not wanting them to drink from the same water fountains.
I will always want my president to talk to my kids. I don't care if he cheated to win an election or had an affair on his wife or lied to take us into two wars that put us in debt beyond belief. This president is a black man who came from nothing and worked hard and became the President of the United States. Who better than to tell my daughter she can be anything she wants to be?
