Woman Wins Lottery, Gives It All to Haslett Church

A $70,000 lottery ticket made its way into the collection basket Wednesday night.

"Wild!"

That's how Pastor Marilyn Parmelee described holding a $70,000 dollar check.

She cashed a winning lottery ticket Thursday, one day after one of her 25 parishioners at Covenant Life Worship Center put it in the collection basket.

"People just don't do that," said Parmelee.  "I'm not sure if I would've done that.  God would have to talk to me pretty loud."

The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, discovered the winning ticket when she found it in her purse.  The Lucky 7's Raffle game held a drawing May 4 and turns out, the woman's ticket was a winner.  She told wilx.com why she gave all of it to her church and it started with the help she received after a car accident four years ago that left her with a closed head injury.

"I don't know where I'd be if it wasn't for all of them," she said.  "I might not have made it."

Both she and Parmelee call her gift to the church a "reap what you sow" kind of thing, since the woman is moving to Florida to join the ministry herself.  Giving to another ministry means hers will receive a healthy gift.

"I believe when you give things will be given back to you," said the woman with her 19-year old daughter by her side.  "God watched over me for the last four years.  I won't say it's been easy, but He's really taken care of me."

Parmelee says the church is considering paying for a mission in Africa with the money, which is tax-free since it's a non-profit organization.
