It's early on Monday morning and I'm thinking about two things: coffee and golf-- in that order. Golf because today was the 11th annual Ronald McDonald House Golf Classic which I have been involved with for the last 7 years. Just before I leave the house for Biggby and that luscious tall mocha caramel, I remember I need to tape Regis today. Friday somebody mentioned they thought Monday was the day they would announce the finalists for the co-host for a day contest. But it's early on a Monday and I haven't had my coffee and remembering to bring my suit for work later was the only thing my brain was capable of capturing on this morn.
About 10 a.m. I was about to hit my second tee shot on the 13th hole at MSU Forest Akers when my phone went off. It was my friend Aaron with a one-word text: "Congrats." I sent back "For what?" and hit my shot. It was a beauty down the fairway. I was hitting tee shots and MSU Women's Basketball coach Suzy Merchant was on the green hitting putts. Golfers give a donation of their choice to the House and today was a great success. Anywho, after I hit my shot I wondered if he was talking about the show. I got a little excited. His next text said: "Regis." Now I was nervous. Then came about four more texts saying congrats and my Facebook started lighting up. Now I was pumped.
The next four or five groups didn't get great shots, because I could hardly concentrate and my hands were a little shaky. And it wasn't the coffee's fault. It was the thought of possibly sitting next to Kelly Ripa on national television.
The rest of my day consisted of trying to send out messages getting as many people as possible to vote for me, simply because the other 9 finalists are from bigger cities like Miami, Tampa and Chicago. That's a lot of people to go to their computers. A few more than in Lansing. So, Julie started hitting the Facebook, making calls and sending texts to get the word out along with a few others. She called the MSU Alumni Foundation, the State Journal (which never called because it's not big enough news apparently that a local guy has a chance to be on Live! With Regis and Kelly) and many others to start spreading the news.
While I'm talking about Julie, she does have to get a lot of credit for my audition tape that I sent in that they must have liked. Using the kids was her idea. Having Leah hold the funny sign was her idea. Going to the Lugnuts game was her idea. Way to go, babe!
Also gotta thank Darrin Rockcole for seeing the contest on our website just days before it ended and for the a.m. producer Tammy Pitts-Williams making sure I knew about it and to get my butt in gear to send in my tapes.
And of course, thanks to all who voted for me and got the word out already. Now to you-- GO OUT AND VOTE! You can do it on our home page at the breaking news story or by going to livewithregisandkelly.com.
VOTING ENDS AT 9 P.M.-- TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND TELL THEM TO TELL THEIR FRIENDS AND TELL THEM TO TELL.....
