Hoop Dreams

It's never easy when the fairytale ends.

I didn't want to write about MSU and its Final Four run here because I hadn't.  Like any MSU fan the last couple weeks, I didn't want to do anything different to mess up the karma.  I even wore the same shirt the last three games-- unwashed of course.  A guy at our party last night was wearing the same underwear.  Yeah, TMI, I agreed.

In the end, karma had nothing to do with it.  MSU just played its best basketball of the season for 5 games and like the rest of the season, that streak ended.  We reeled off 9 or so wins in a row after the first loss to UNC, but weren't playing as well as possible.  MSU put another streak together at the end of the season until Ohio State knocked them off in the BTT.  But, again I thought they could put some wins together, because they responded well to a loss all year.

They did that and more.  Five wins against great teams and cruising to another Final Four.  Many will feel hollow about this season, because State got so close to a dream finish, but come on, Carolina was a group of men.  Five NBA players in the starting lineup who came back to win a title is tough to compete with.  When the season started, i was hopeful this team had a Final Four in them.  As the season wore on, I knew that was a long shot.  Staudt asks me that numerous times a year and the last time he asked I said it would all depend on their draw.  If they could get the easiest road possible (Dayton, Indianapolis, Detroit) and not have to play UNC or Pittsburgh-- they have a chance.  As it turned out, they went to Minneapolis, Indy, Detroit and got Louisville.

Here's the bottom line about this team this year and why every fan should be overjoyed with them.  At no time this year did I think this was a team that could win it all.  A Final Four seemed like a longshot.  they got to a FF and for a few hours had us all thinking they could pull off one of the most unlikely titles in NCAA history.

Congrats, Tom on one of your best coaching jobs ever.  Now if you can convince Kalin and Raymar not to make a Marcus Taylor-like mistake, us fans can dream big again next year.
