Who thought The Jonas Brothers had any business sharing a stage with Stevie Wonder? Sorry, I'm all for collaborations with the old and the new (I thought Al Green with Justin Timberlake was great) but a Disney kid band trying to hang with one of the pioneers of R&B? I think even Stevie could see he looked a little ridiculous with these punks on stage last night. I can't post the video here since the Grammys are copyrighted, but you can watch it here.
Whitney Houston is another story altogether. Here's some of the reviews of her pre-Grammy performance last night:
Whitney Houston's performance at a Recording Academy party honoring Clive Davis was on everyone's lips backstage. "Whitney Houston rocked the house," said Herbie Hancock. "Whitney is back," echoed Mary Mary's Tina Campbell. Said Yolanda Adams, "We are constantly praying for her. My joy is that the world saw that you don't have to stay in the shape you're in. You can move up."
Whitney Houston is back. Last night she took the stage at Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy bash and wowed the crowd with a medley of hits. She was clean, sober, and joyous, absolutely radiant and healthy. Houston knew it was a triumph and she gained confidence as she went from her opening ballad—a shortened version of “I Will Always Love You” through a few of her hits ending with a buoyant “I’m Every Woman.” If there was a fear that her voice was gone, she dispelled it. And while she may not be singing the way she did at 25, the 45-year-old is still among the very premiere song stylists in the world.
Apparently, everyone missed her on stage right as the Grammys took the air to present the award for Best Performance in an R&B Song by a Singer Never Been to Rehab or Arrested... or whatever it was. Was it me, or was Whitney not so much "clean, sober and joyous" and more high, wasted and arrogant? Either that, or she's going for the squinting, talk-like-a-Brit look. If I can find the video of it, I'll put a link here.
And I'm not even going to try explaining what I saw from M.I.A. Nine months pregnant, wearing a dress that looked a little like she'd just crossed a finish line and rapping with Jay-Z, Kanye, T.I., and L'il Wayne.
