Jessica's Swansong?

A review of last night's Rascal Flatts concert in Grand Rapids.

You may have read somewhere today about Jessica Simpson's odd concert in Grand Rapids at Van Andel Arena.  You can see it here.
I was there last night to witness it.  Funny, but I didn't take all that away from it, in fact, no one in the group of eight that I was with ever mentioned one word about her performance being strange.  We were caught up in all the recent press about her weight and how she looked pretty good to us.  And by "us" I mean the guys.  She definitely looked good.

It did look like she may have added a couple pounds since her Dukes of Hazzard stuff (above) but she was more than presentable in her Daisy Dukes and blouse.  In that article it mentioned she forgot some of her lyrics, bordered on tears at times and asked the band to start over at one point.  I can't speak to the lyrics thing, since I can't name one of her songs as it is, but she did seem out of it.  She was constantly hassling with her earpiece and did get a little emotional during a song called "Pray Out Loud."  I remember when she asked the band to start over, but she was talking to the crowd as the song began and simply seemed like she had more to say than anticipated and calmly asked them to begin again.  Didn't seem all that weird.  I did not see when she reportedly mouthed the word "sorry" on the big screen.  Her spokesman did say she had an off night.  She didn't really move around the stage with any energy and that was about all I noticed as odd.  But again, I didn't come to see her-- or I should say I didn't go to see her sing.

That was reserved for Rascal Flatts, who you might remember I saw last year in Detroit.  I've never seen the same act twice, but wasn't opposed since I figured they'd play some stuff they didn't the first time.  When my wife bought the tickets she thought they would play the same show.  It was great, but I was hoping they'd at least play their new song.  Nope.  Exact same show right down to what they said to the crowd at times.  An incredible letdown.  Plus the acoustics were much better at The Palace than at Van Andel.

I've read how many groups play different sets every night for the simple reason if they don't they'd go insane.  My friend who's seen Bruce Springsteen like 18 times said he's never seen the same show twice.  Now, it's possible Rascal Flatts does that and just happened to play the same show they did last year.  But in the same state?  Bit of a bummer.  However, dinner at The Bob and a night out with Julie and our good friends more than made up for that.
