Rainfall this month was mainly late Labor day and the following Tuesday. This was only in the far south of the state. Basically I-96 south got lucky with some showers. North of there and for most of the Great Lakes it has been a long dry spell. Marquette has had its driest start for the first two weeks of September...ever. While dry weather it great for football games and last minute yard work it doesn't fit very well for things that grow. Farmers look forward to some late growing season rain to help bulk up the corn and other veggies. The dry spell is not good for trees either. You may have noticed some early color but more important you may have noticed more leaves on the ground. Trees in a drought get stressed and loose leaves to help them survive. If the drought continues it may not affect the fall colors but it may be a short viewing season. |
