Good Fishin'

Summertime in the Great Lakes means a whole lot of fishing going on. Many people pick up a pole and head to water to enjoy the Great Lakes fishery, which has been one of the largest freshwater fisheries in the world for over 100 years. The greatest Great Lakes commercial fishing harvests were recorded in 1889 and 1899, with about 147 million pounds o fish. Since then, the fishery has been impacted y several threats, including overfishing, water pollution, and the introduction of non-native species to Great Lakes waters. Recent years, however, have seen fishery improvements - walleye fisheries are recovering in Lake Erie, trout populations have become more self-sustaining in Lake Superior, and new salmon fisheries are developing in Lake Ontario. Fishery researchers estimate that 25 to 40 percent of the salmon and trout populations in Lakes Michigan,Huron, and Ontario are now self-reproducing, tanks to improved habitat, water quality, and stream conditions.

FISHING IN THE LOCAL LAKES HAS BEEN TOUGH, THE BEST TIMES ARE EARLY IN THE MORNING AND EVENINGS STRAIGHT THROUGH TILL MORNING. THESE HOT HUMID DAYS HAVE BEEN KEEPING THE FISH DEEP ONLY TO COME UP IN THE EVENINGS TO FEED, WALLEYE AND BASS BEING THE MOST PRODUCTIVE USING SLOW MOVING CRANKS OR CRAWLER HARNESSES AS THE WARM TEMPS HAVE SLOWED THE FISH DOWN DURING THE DAY. WITH THE WATER TEMPS RUNNING AROUND 75 DEGREES AT THE SURFACE TO ABOUT 10 FEET PAN FISH ARE HUNGRY AND HAVE BEEN STAYING TIGHT TO DROP OFFS WITH WEEDS, THE BASS AND WALLEYE ARE DOING THE SAME THING LIKE THEY ARE STAYING DEEPER AND COMING UP TO TAKE BAIT FISH ONLY TO RETURN TO THE COOLER WATERS. TRY AROUND THE 15 TO 20 FOOT MARK AND WATCH FOR LARGER FISH FOLLOWING BAIT FISH, IF YOU ARE USING A GRAPH THIS WILL LOOK LIKE A FLOATING BALL SUSPENDED SOMEWHERE IN THE WATER COLUMN. SOME GRAPHS HAVE THE ABILITY TO SHOW THE THERMAL CLINE LOOK FOR FISH ABOVE OR BELOW THIS LINE, IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO TROLL THIS LINE ALSO.GOOD LUCK
