CoCoRaHS is coming to Michigan July 1st

On July 1st,2008, Michigan will become the 34th state to participate in a national Community Collaborative Rain,Hail, and Snow Network, or CoCoRaHS. CoCoRaHS is a dense network of volunteers who measure and report precipitation. The network is made up of weather enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds who send in daily observations from their homes, schools, and businesses.

The network originated with the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University in 1998, a year after a major flood occurred in Fort Collins. In the years since, CoCoRaHS has expanded rapidly with over 9,000+ observers in more than thirty states. The goals are simple. 1) provide accurate high-quality precipitation data. 2) increase the density of precipitation data available throughout the country by encouraging volunteer weather observing. 3) encourage citizens to have fun participating in meteorological science and heighten their awareness about the weather. 4)provide enrichment activities in water and weather resources for teachers, educators, and the community.

The Michigan State Climate Office at Michigan State University and the National Weather Service are looking for observers to join the Michigan CoCoRaHS Network. Ideally they would like to have one observer per square mile in urban areas and every 36 square miles in rural areas. Anyone interested it requires minimal training and only takes about 5 minutes per day. The observations can be taken from your home, school, or office. To be part of the network you will need: 1) an official 4" diameter rain gauge 2) to attend a 90 minute training session. 3) an Internet or phone connection. 4) an interest in the weather!

Kasey B- It was priceless to hear Jason attempt and try to pronounce CoCoRaHS (Coh-coh-rah-his). We need more onservers in Lansing and all of Ingham county. Just look at how successful Kent County and the greater Grand Rapids metro area- 18 observers in Kent County alone- when only 5 people at last check are members of CoCoRaHS in Ingham County; only two of which- including me- are observing. Also, Andy- nice studio! Can't wait to see it in an hour at 11! Are you trying to compete with The Weather Channel, which is now acquired by NBC which you guys are a member of? Back to CoCoRaHS- there are no training sessions listed on the Michigan page (I am trying to avoid the hardwork of typing that acronym). I am glad they finally updated this page- but dissapointed with the lack of information and work they put on the page. Check out Utah's page! They have about half as many observers as Michigan does, but a much better page.

I just love meteorology...actually i have wanted to be meteorologist since first grade and I'm only in 7th!!!

I will be joining CoCoRaHS soon. I need to replace my rain gauge first(long story). I'm sorry I missed hearing Jason try to pronounce CoCoRaHS - I bet it was priceless. Hey Andy, do you think you could get him to do it again for those of us who missed it? :)

I am already a member- my station ID is MI-IH-1; I was the first observer in the state as well as Ingham County to sign up. How do you know that we are the 34th state to sign up, since Utah is joining at the same time? I check the Michigan CoCoRaHS website probably ten times a day, and there is nothing on the page except for the map and "CoCoRaHS kicks off in Michigan on July 1, 2008". I have taken the online training and have a rain guage. I am enthused to finally be a member of CoCoRaHS since I have known about the program and Michigan becoming a state since two days after Christmas (this past year). It is very simple, and fun, but I don't like being compared to nearby stations. It can make my data stand out. All of the NWS offices in Michigan have mentioned CoCoRaHS escept for ours in Grand Rapids. If you look at the maps, this is obvious. By the way, I saw your mention of CoCoRaHS on the 11:00 news a couple nights back. It was fun hearing Jason Colthorp try to pronounce it!
