Meteorological Summer

Summer officially doesn't start until June 21st but in meteorology we break the seasons into 4 equal three month segments. June first starts Meteorological Summer. A normal summer has an average high temperature at 80º. The average low temperature is 57º. In that three month season we see 8.76" of precipitation. Probably the most important number for most is the number of days with the high above 89º. The average is 9.2 days. Last year we had 12 days in the 90's. Just a few years ago in 2002 we had no days in the 90's.

Since April and May were below normal temperatures not only for Michigan but for most of the eastern two thirds of the nation, does not mean that will be likely this summer. In fact many summers after a cool spring turn out to above normal temperatures. The precipitation is more likely to be above normal. In fact the forecast for the Great Lakes water levels is to rise over the early summer.
