What in the world will the Detroit Tigers' payroll be now? They are not a franchise with $214 million players. Mike Ilitch isn't that type of an owner. And out of nowhere Tuesday comes word the Tigers are acquiring free agent Prince Fielder for $214 million over the next nine years. That averages out to $147,000 a game and one of our staff said today it takes me nearly five years to make that kind of money!
Where will Fielder play? Miguel Cabrera is the first baseman. I'm thinking Cabrera can play third at times if Brandon Inge continues to struggle at the plate as he did last season. Would the Tigers have made this offer had Victor Martinez still be in healthy? Probably not. Fielder has missed one game in three years. His dad is Cecil, though the two are essentially estranged. Cecil played for the Tigers, remember?
The Tigers were Central division favorites without Fielder, but even with him can they contend to win the World Series? I think they needed another big time pitcher for that kind of money but they'll have to hope what they have is enough to get to the Series this coming fall. Fielder will sell plenty of tickets-- and he better because the Tigers' cost of business is rising substantially. Ilitch is of course getting on in years-- clearly he wants another World Series title for the franchise and the city.
