The talk is out there, rumbling around town. Sexton or Eastern will close next year and the student populations will merge. Bet? Most people believe Eastern will close. The building needs much upgrading and Sparrow Hospital reportedly will pay for the land. Sexton has better athletic facilities, though I do not know what would become of Don Johnson Fieldhouse. Nothing's definite but new Eastern High School football coach Robert McBride knows this might be his only season as a head coach.
Everyone I know in education tells me there are no options. A school must close at the high school level. Only 13,000 students remain in the Lansing schools, down from a one time high of 34,000. Everett likely will stay open on the south side. Who knows when a final decision will be determined and announced and a merged school would be mighty good in athletics to be sure.
It's all speculative but very few in Lansing city high school sports expect the three school set up to continue past this school year. Stay tuned.
