This is the final week of the Big Ten men's basketball regular season. Michigan is ranked 7th in the A-P poll and Michigan State is 10th despite a three game losing streak. So where are both headed? MSU figures to win its final two home games, against Wisconsin Thursday and Northwestern on Sunday. Michigan has a tougher challenge-- at Purdue Wednesday and home at 4pm Sunday against Indiana. Michigan I think can still earn a number one seed in the NCAA tournament, though it must beat the Hoosiers. I think they're both close to even in talent. Both can have reasonable hopes in the NCAA tournament figuring they'll get neutral floors to show their talent without being influenced by road crowds. Michigan has lost five Big Ten road games and MSU four.
If they meet in the NCAA tournament it would like be in the Final Four April 6th in Atlanta-- and they'd love to have such a confrontation meaning they had advanced that far. Both are vulnerable at times as everyone who follows them knows-- but both also are among a large group of capable teams who can play well and win when things are going well.
