I'm back from the 125th birthday party for Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island-- three days of fun and gala parties-- and I mean the social soirees of the season! Fireworks, golf tournament, cocktail parties, banquets, special events and music, you name it.
Three Michigan governors were there-- Milliken, Engler and Blanchard, combining for 33 years of service and so was the attorney general who served them all- Frank Kelly. Add in the arriving boats from the Port Huron to Mackinac race-- well it's a busy time on the island.
A drive over the Mackinac Bridge was fun-- $4 one way for cars now. Hard to believe something that massive was built 55 years ago and is so sturdy and strong. Once in St. Ignace we checked out Clyde's, considered a top hamburger place since 1971 and it was packed next to a relatively empty McDonald's. People today commented that they are aware of Clyde's hamburgers.
I don't know how all of those hotels make it in the off season, but it's busy now and it was fun rubbing elbows with the three governors for a weekend.
