Weekend at Purdue/South Bend

When you have kids in college you travel to visit them-- maybe often. Since mid May I have been home all of three weekends for a variety of reasons. I was at Purdue and Notre Dame this last weekend-- one kid working in Purdue's athletic department, another a senior at Notre Dame.

They meet each other at 3:30pm September 8th in South Bend. Always a family feud and Notre Dame has had the best of it so far. Purdue held its "Meet the Boilermakers" day on Saturday. It was what you'd expect and what others do-- band, cheerleaders, players, pictures, autographs, etc. Head coach Danny Hope told the 500 or so fans on hand what they wanted to hear-- go after Big Ten title, etc.

But it was a solemn weekend-- Neil Armstrong passed away later Saturday. He's a Purdue man and helped the school. Flowers appeared at his statue outside the gorgeous Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering. He helped the school with visits every so often. In South Bend on a rainy Sunday many are preparing to head to Dublin this week for Saturday's game against Navy. It's a big deal. Notre Dame has four players suspended as well and that's a big deal too.
