Tough Day For Former Spartans

The NFL is cutting players to get down to 53 for regular season openers next week-- and some Spartans on Friday are casualties:

Greg Jones was cut by the New York Giants and because he played 16 games last season, he cannot go on the practice squad.  Jones was  a 6th round pick in the 2010 draft and won a Super Bowl ring from last February.

Receiver B. J. Cunningham, a 6th round pick in April of the Miami Dolphins, is also now free to sign elsewhere.  He was a big record holder at Michigan State last season but his NFL prospects are unknown tonight.

And quarterback Brian Hoyer has been cut by the New England Patriots after three seasons.  He was undrafted out of Michigan State and backed up Tom Brady and would have been a free agent after this seaon.  The Patriots are making Ryan Mallett their back up this fall.

And more cuts could be coming.
