Just a hunch. They're not the best team in baseball by any stretch, but I bet the Detroit Tigers are the first team to clinch a divisional title. They have 35 games left against all of the Central Division teams, none of them any good. They also have series left with Baltimore and Oakland, both of whom are awful and a home series with Tampa Bay-- the third place team in the East. The Tigers should roll through that group and Justin Verlander has seven starts left. He has won seven straight starts so theoretically he could finish 26-5.... doubtful that will happen, but he's hot right now, right?
More significantly the rest of the Central Division is hardly playoff caliber. None of the other three-- Chicago, Cleveland and Minnesota, have the strength to muster a charge. The Tigers are 5 games up on Cleveland mid way through the day Tuesday-- the Indians beat Seattle 7-5 in the first of two games Tuesday. And Chicago is 5 1/2 back and neither one is good enough to make any kind of run. The Tigers aren't great but they'll win by seven or eight games when the divisions are finished and they could be first to clinch-- just a hunch. They'll play Boston or New York in the playoffs and that's where I see them ending their season-- the first round.
