I had a visit to Walnut Hills Country Club Tuesday for a golf outing, two interviews with general manager Bill Mory and head pro Vic Whipp. Both know the game inside and out. They had thoughts on the U. S. Open.
Mory thinks the course will play harder next year at Olympia in San Francisco, site of the 2012 U. S. Open after Rory McIlroy just torched it to 16 under par. The USGA, like Bill says, doesn't want a winner to break a scoring record like that. Congressional played 7,500 yards as it is but McIlroy had no trouble as we all know. Whipp believes Tiger Woods will definitely win again after I uttered my prediction that he won't win another tournament let alone a major. He agrees with me that there are plenty of players out on tour who will have their week and beat the field. Woods would be in that group, but he thinks Woods will return healthy and be fine once he does. We'll see. Neither is surprised the DeWitt boys' team won a second straight state title. Mory once coached the Haslett boys varsity and Whipp coaches the East Lansing boys currently and he thinks he'll have a strong team next spring. Both believe that area high school boys golf talent is rampant in the area.
