You'd think the busy high school coverage times are fall and winter, and they are to be sure. But, man the school year ends with plenty to do because there are so many spring sports and they all head to state tournaments at the same time. The first Saturday in June is especially busy. There are four state track meets for boys and girls in the Grand Rapids area. We're watching East Lansing's boys, ranked number one in division two and a good shot at winning a state title.
In soccer, 6pm Saturday, we're looking at a big division three district final, Lansing Catholic at Williamston, it starts at 6pm. Both are good teams. In softball, Eaton Rapids is 33-5 and plays in its district Saturday at Portland with a 10am opener against Ionia. Eaton Rapids is the area's best team and loaded with freshmen and sophomores.
In baseball, Grand Ledge, 27-1 is at Holt Saturday at 10am in a district opener. Grand Ledge won a doubleheader at home two weeks ago but Holt is a rival and a better team at home. They might also meet in the Diamond Classic final next Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium, if they win their semi-final games Monday night. Holt has ruined Grand Ledge's seasons before. There's tennis too, but all of the girls are out of town Saturday.
