Remembering Francie Daugherty

I knew her as Mrs. Daugherty, who lived up the street in East Lansing in the 1950s and 60s.  Her husband was Duffy, the MSU football coach and they were both so much a part of my youth.  I haven't found it anywhere else in the media yet-- but Mrs. Daugherty died Tuesday.  She was 90 and living near her daughter Dree in suburban Detroit.

Duffy and Francie had Danny, who roomed with me two years in college and Dree and my sister were good friends growing up.  Francie and my mother were also close when we lived near each other.  Then my dad went to General Motors in 1969 and Duffy retired after the 1972 season and we didn't see each other as much after that.

I saw Francie last spring at the Duffy Daugherty Award dinner and I'm glad I did.  she looked frail at the timie in a wheel chair.  She'd moved from her beloved Santa Barbara, California, where she lived in retirement after Duffy passed away in August of 1987.  She will be buried there.  She was very elegant and had her own style-- a very good Italian cook.  She saw in the stands at the home games and rarely traveled on the road.  She lived 24 1/2 years after Duffy passed on and I will always remember her charm and strength and character from younger days.
