Pre Season Rankings Don't Mean Much

Michigan State's football players don't seem happy by their #13 ranking in the first USA Today/Coaches poll released Thursday.  It's the highest the Spartans have been ranked in pre season since this poll began in 1991.  That seems pretty good.

LSU is ranked one and Alabama two and son of a gun if they weren't in the title game back in January.  Let's face it these polls at the beginning of a year are basically off reputation and what happened at the end of the previous season.  That's why MSU gets some love but not in the top ten.

By the middle of the year it's easier to tell who is good and who is overrated so they all have a chance to move up from where they are.  Michigan State can't slip up in early games, but others can't either, right?  Michigan is ranked eighth to the amazement of some, especially since the Wolverines have a tough schedule beginning with Alabama.  But again, pre season polls don't seem to mean very much relative to what happens by the end of the year.
