The Big Ten went 10-2 its first week of non conference football play. Minnesota gave USC a scare on the road, losing 19-17. Indiana gave its own coach a scare of how bad the Hoosiers really, are losing 27-20 to Ball State in Indianapolis. Everyone else won, but many of the games were awful mismatches as is usually the case at this time of year.
I was most impressed by Wisconsin. Good team speed. Ohio State was efficient but Akron is terrible. Michigan State has a long ways to go and so does Iowa and Penn State, but those teams will all be winners. Northwestern winning at Boston College is nice, but I'm not sure how good B C really is.
Michigan is getting plenty of criticism despite a 34-10 win but the Wolverines surprise me by being named 4 1/2 point underdogs to Notre Dame this Saturday night. I think Michigan will win but not everyone agrees with me. Michigan will get better defensively. At least the Wolverines know they'll face Tommy Rees to start the game and not Dayne Crist at quarterback. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly announced a change in starters Tuesday.
