Opening Thoughts From the Big Ten Women's Tourney

Impossible.  How did Northwestern's women's team ever win at Nebraska during the regular season?  If you watched the Cornhuskers play Northwestern in the second game Thursday of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis it looked like Northwestern had never even played the game.  Nebraska had a 54-25 halftime lead and cruised 88-56 and Northwestern was lost from the get go-- but by that big a margin?  Northwestern gave Michigan State a game for a half this past Sunday but basketball at the women's level just isn't very good and hasn't been at that school.

Nebraska is wildly unpredictable-- terrible last week in a 20-point loss at Michigan State.  The Spartans should roll Indiana, but then the tournament is a toss up for everyone the rest of the way.  I don't see Michigan winning it all but the Wolverines were mildly impressive at times in the opening win over Illinois 68-53.  And yet watching Illinois how did the Illini ever win in East Lansing earlier in the regular season?  Illinois was 0-7 in the Big Ten at the time.

I hope the Big Ten got a good deal on the fieldhouse.  As usual the crowd, if that's the right word, was limited-- maybe several hundred in actuality at each game.  I never believe women's basketball shines when television cameras show thousands of empty seats at these games.
