Thoughts after one night of area boys high school basketball play:
Everyone said the cupboard was bare at Okemos after Dan Stolz stepped down as head coach following last season. Maybe it is, but it sure didn't look that way Tuesday night. Led by interior presence Nathan Lafayette who scored 23 points, Okemos crushed Haslett at Haslett 62-38. Maybe Haslett is the team that is left to wonder about the season ahead.
Desmond Ferguson made his coaching debut at Everett and is trying to change the losing culture that has been around the program the past few years. Everett, at home, beat Williamston 66-55. East Lansing is off to a good start, 71-54 at Battle Creek Lakeview. Sexton won at Howell 59-48 but it's too soon to tell if Sexton will be dominant or not. It's amazing the difference in the boys and girls programs at Sexton. The girls team has scored 12 and 9 points in its first two games, both blowout losses.
