Preparing for the rigors of March Madness, I spent three days in Florida this past week end. Observations:
High school baseball is huge and play begins in early February. No wonder the Florida baseball players are so good, especially the high school and college teams. There are many transplaned northerners in Florida during the winter who follow their favorite teams at sports bars-- and there are plenty of sports bars with televisions carrying the usual basketball and hockey games.
Spring training is huge in the media at this point-- and the Detroit Tigers are a big deal at Lakeland with Prince Fielder now on board. All the newspapers are busy selling spring training tickets. The Tampa Bay Rays were pleased with their fan fast on Saturday at Tropicana Field which drew thousands of fans.
Florida football is big and year round in terms of coverage and Florida is busy landing verbal commitments at this point. And those commitments get reported in the media. And golf courses are obviously more packed at this time of year than in the summer when many of the snowbirds go home.
I love Florida for the weather, but hate the traffic, which is an issue at most resort cities like Sarasota.
