We hear coaches this season discuss the lack of leadership on their teams in college basketball. It's an issue at Michigan State and Michigan for sure. My question-- name me a bona fide leader in college hoops this season. I'm sure there are some for some teams who we don't hear about. But the only name I've heard that makes sense is Aaron Craft at Ohio State. He's an upper classmen and there's part of the rub. College basketball has so few quality seniors anymore. They run to the NBA early and so mature college players who are seniors don't always have the credibility with their teammates because they are not pros.
No question the Spartans and Wolverines don't have guys their coaches can depend on to help on the floor and offer advice off the court. I maintain leaders are born and then they learn leadership skills along the way. But I don't think leaders can be created from clay once personalities are fully developed. But it's an issue this season and it will be interesting to see at season's end if the national champion has a true leader on its roster.
