Mildly Surprised About Leyland

If the Tigers had won the World Series would Jim Leyland have retired?  Who knows.  Leyland will soon turn 68 but he loves managing the Tigers, who have given him a one year contract to return for an eighth season.  The Tigers are already picked by one betting house to win the World Series next year.  6-1 odds, best of any of the 30 teams.

Jhonny Peralta and Octavio Dotel are returning, fine.  But, there are other holes and watching the Tigers develop their roster in the off season should be interesting.  They have four free agents who can sign elsewhere beginning Saturday-- Anibal Sanchez, Delmon Young, Gerald Laird and Jose Valverde.  Young and Valverde are most certainly gone.  Victor Martinez is due to return but at what capability after sitting out a year?

The Central Division looks like it will be lousy again so make the Tigers a favorite to win it for the third straight year and after that who knows.
