The idea of outdoor hockey in a big stadium began at Michigan State with the Cold War in 2001. Since then Michigan has played outdoors at Wisconsin and hosted the Spartans last December, besides the Wolverines appearance in Spartan Stadium. Now Michigan is likely to play Ohio State come January in the Cleveland Indians' stadium.
The Indians want more winter time use out of their stadium and a CCHA game between rival schools seemed like a natural. The official announcement has not yet been made because details are still being worked out. Michigan is 1-1-1 in outdoor games and while Ohio State hockey isn't the biggest deal in Columbus an outdoor game with Michigan might be a bigger deal in Cleveland.
Michigan's Yost Arena may soon undergo a $14 million renovation as well. The Wolverines finished runner up in the NCAA tournament in April and it's a busy summer of news items with an underclass player leaving and a new assistant coach assigned to help Red Berenson. Now the schedule for next season likely will feature a January outdoor game in CCHA play.
