Magic Trying to Help Former Teammate Jay

How well those in my generation around here remember the high school basketball days of the 1970s-- Earvin Johnson at Everett and Jay Vincent at Eastern.  In a way, they are together again, at age 52 for both, Earvin trying to assist Jay.  But certainly in a far different manner than the basketball court.

Earvin has written a letter to the judge asking for leniency for Jay, who pled guilty a year ago to fraud and racketeering charges.  He is accused of, among other things, defrauding 20,000 people out of more than $1 million in foreclosed home inspections.  Jay has been in jail since July and faces sentencing in Grand Rapids on Friday.  He could receive at least nine years in prison.

Earvin is asking for probation so Jay can pay off his investors.  Will it help?  Who knows.  Jay's brother Sam, who lives in Orlando and will coach in China this next season, came back to Lansing this summer to look for support for his brother's cause.  Who knows what Jay's fate will be, but the Magic/Jay combination sure is different from those thrilling days in 1979 when they teamed up to lead Michigan State to the national title.
