MSU To NCAA Tourney?

It's been since 1979 since Michigan State has made the NCAA baseball tournament.  There are 8 regular season games left-- I'll pick the Spartans to win 'em all-- 3 at home over Iowa this week end, 3 at home next week over Penn State plus home today, Wednesday, over Toledo and next Tuesday at Comerica Park vs. CMU.  That would give State a 38-16 record heading into the Big Ten tournament and likely second place finish behind Purdue in the Big Ten.

State won't repeat as regular season champ, but winning the Big Ten tourney, May 23-26 in Columbus gets an automatic bid and that could happen.  It's a double elimination tournament for the top six teams in the standings and I claim State would have every bit as good a chance as Purdue or any of the other four teams involved.  But if MSU doesn't win the tourney can it get an at large bid?  That's the big question.  And MSU is currently #44 in the RPI, needing to move up for the 64-team field.  I believe mostly wins in these final two weeks will move the Spartans up enough where they can get at large status. It may be close but it's attainable and that would make the year even more satisfying, in my mind, than winning the regular season league title last year but failing to make the NCAA tournament.  Stay tuned.
