MSU Game in Jenison Would Be Great

Michigan State reportedly is considering a basketball game in old Jenison Fieldhouse sometime next year.  It would commemorate the 50th anniversary of the NCAA tournament game in March, 1963 between Loyola, Chicago and Mississippi State.  Mississippi State defied a court order to stay home because it would be playing against black players-- against a state mandate at the time-- hard as that is to believe.  The game was played in Jenison, Loyola won and moved on.  In those days the NCAA tournament consisted of four, four team regionals.  MSU hosted one-- Bowling Green and Illinois were the other two teams.  I was a 14-year old in the stands for it all and remember it vividly-- and remember well that Mississippi State might not show up.

My radio producer, Brock Palmbos, has long advocated an MSU game in Jenison would be well received and I agree.  In fact I have always maintained that atmosphere was as good if not better than Breslin.  I don't like Breslin's balconies like Jenison Fieldhouse has.  Times change, I understand and it was an old barn, but I remember Earvin and the guys on many nights doing TV games from the crow's nest press boxes.  MSU might play a game somehow next season and those memories would come alive once again.
