MSU Baseball Season A Bit Bizarre

Michigan State's baseball season likely is over.  The Spartans are not in the Big Ten tournament which begins Wednesday in Minneapolis.  MSU was 12-9 in league play-- when's the last time the seventh place team finished three games over .500?  That's unique.  Usually such a record is good enough to get teams a much higher standing.  The top six teams qualify of rhte 11 who play baseball.  Wisconsin does not have a baseball team.

MSU was 5-1 against the top two seeded teams in the tournament, Indiana and Ohio State.  But MSU was 5-4 against the teams that did not qualify and that was the problem.  The Spartans had some trouble against some lefthand pitchers and they lost some mysterious games against league teams they were clearly better than, I thought, in watching the season unfold.

The final record is 33-17 and the future is bright.  They may end up losing their top two pitchers but they have good prospects coming in this fall and there's no reason to believe they'll continue to improve in the future behind some very good young hitters.
