The Michigan High School Athletic Association always publishes its participation numbers for the school year past in June. And this year's numbers are interesting in the following ways:
Participation in football is down 6.8 per cent since the 20007 school year. Why?
This year boys tennis had more than 6,800 participants across the state's high schools-- the lowest number since statistics began in 1991-92. Why?
Enrollment overall in state high schools is down 3.7 per cent from 2010-11. Are people leaving Michigan that fast because of the economy? Sports participation though was only down by 1.5 per cent.
Fastest growing sport? Easy. Lacrosse. The girls participation is up 30.6 per cent since 2006-07 and the boys are up 26.6 per cent over the same time period. And those roster sizes are probably hurting other sports where students would have played on other teams.
