I don't see Illinois winning the Big Ten men's basketball title. But the Illini are 4-1 and alone in first place-- for the moment. Everyone else has at least two losses inicluding Michigan, 5-2 and Michigan State, 4-2. The Spartans should win their next two-- home games with Purdue and Minnesota. But MSU has five road games remaining and road game victories, as usual, will determine who wins the league title. Ohio State has two road losses, but both to good teams at home, Illinois and Indiana.
Ohio State still seems like the best team in the Big Ten, but can the Buckeyes stay healthy and not avoid bad losses. And Ohio State's last game is at Michigan State on March 4th, no easy task. As Tom Izzo said after Tuesday's loss at Michigan, there is a long way to go, in fact two thirds of the league season. I think the league teams will all be playing differently come March, than they are right now. Some will get better, some worse, some will have dissension and others will have injuries to deal with. The Spartans have lost three in a row to Michigan but I like MSU's chances to end that streak on Super Bowl Sunday when the teams meet again in the Breslin Center, February 5th, at 1pm. Just a hunch.
