Local Baseball Dominance Continues For Grand Ledge

As long as Pat O'Keefe coaches high school baseball at Grand Ledge, the power in the sport at the prep level in the area likely will not change.  O'Keefe now has 1,100 wins in 45 seasons after his team's Diamond Classic 15-3 romp Tuesday night over  East Lansing.  Grand Ledge, despite not winning either its league or district title, finished 30-7.  Only because Justin Alleman pitched at Holt and beat the Comets twice, did Grand Ledge fail to win either crown.  The Comets crushed Holt 10-0 when Alleman was not on the mound.  When he was, he struck out 34 Comet hitters out of 42 outs.

The rest of the area just does not have a youth program like Grand Ledge fields each summer.  It's a big sport in the community and I don't see baseball growing at the youth level anymore.  That means the weak play I perceive generally around the area will continue and no one can catch Grand Ledge for general overall dominance.  Holt is good this year but when Alleman leaves it will be much tougher next spring to beat the Comets even once.
