It's Exciting in the State Tournament

On a beautiful Tuesday afternoon, it was fun to watch Lansing Catholic and Parchment meet in the division 3 state high school baseball quarter-finals.  And unlike the Diamond Classic, this game was full of thrills.  Good crowd for both teams and plenty of groans and cheering.

Catholic somehow rallied from 5-2 down to force extra innings and a failed squeeze bunt was the undoing for Parchment who had runners at 2nd and 3rd in the 7th inning with no one out but did not score.  In the same inning Catholic centerfielder Adam Babcock made a diving game saving catch.  It took a wild pitch in the bottom of the 9th for the Cougars to score the winning run by Josh Holtham.  He led off the inning safe on an error on a grounder to short, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on the pitch.  Cougars win 6-5 and when I look at the bracket they could win the title.  They meet Mattawan at 5pm Friday at Bailey Park in Battle Creek in the semi-finals. Mattawan needed 8 innings to beat Newaygo 2-1 in its quarter-final Tuesday in Traverse City.  It's been an incredible athletic year for Lansing Catholic and the thrills may not end until Saturday night in the final game of the high school sports year in Michigan.
