He joined Michigan State's hockey coaching staff in 1990 after meeting Ron Mason in Canada. A job opened and Mason named Tom Newton one of his assistant coaches. Mason has long since retired and Newton is still in his office in Munn Arena, helping his third MSU head coach. He stayed for Rick Comley and now for Tom Anastos.
Newton says he would entertain head coaching jobs but who knows if his fate isn't to be a loyal aide and a Spartan for the remainder of his career. He handles many duties from the current kid’s hockey camp to tomorrow night's women's hockey clinic. He organizes practices in August, when former MSU players now in pro hockey, return to campus for a reunion before their seasons begin in earnest.
Newton has survived the coaching wars with good teams and bad as was the case last year when MSU finished in the basement in the CCHA's final season of existence. He is excited about the new look Big Ten and professes to love his post in East Lansing. He is one college assistant coach who has been able to find some roots in a volatile business.
