It isn't the Diamond Classic, but the 10th annual Home Run For Hope high school baseball tournament will be played Saturday at Cooley Law School Stadium and it has plenty of value to it, even if the teams aren't all that good.
The three city schools-- Sexton, Eastern and Everett, never seem to be good enough to make the Diamond Classic, but this event, a one day affair, gives them a chance to win a trophy and play in the big stadium. Waverly fills out the field this year and baseball is a struggle for the Warriors as well.
There are few if any youth programs for baseball that help the city schools and provide polished high school players to the city teams. And it shows. Some of the CAAC scores are incredibly lopsided each spring. But the Home Run For Hope gets plenty of support from the city and the police department and what money is raised goes to the school system and the HOPE scholarship program. It's a three game day with the winners playing for the title at mid afternoon.
