The Diamond Classic is about to crown its 50th champion and if Grand Ledge beats Holt Wednesday night that would make 22 titles, or 44 per cent of them, going to the Comets. The school has used many baseball players to win the titles over the years and it is amazing to me how Grand Ledge is so good in this sport year after year.
Pat O'Keefe is in his 43rd year as head coach with more than 1,000 wins, second all time in state history to Blissfield's Larry Tuttle. Who knows when it will all end for him. His team is 33-1 this season heading into Saturday's Regionals at Battle Creek's Brown Stadium.
No high school program in this area in my memory comes close to the consistent success Grand Ledge always seems to have in baseball. The area is not great in talent but Grand Ledge is still dominant nonetheless. Obviously the sport is big in the community and at the youth level and O'Keefde gets plenty of prospects to nurture when they hit high school. Few programs at the prep level in the country can have the cumulative record Grand Ledge baseball has racked up over O'Keefe's long tenure.
