I've always loved college hockey. Like most other college sports, I have issues with the scheduling, but this is truly hockey season and Michigan and Michigan State go at it Friday and Saturday. Michigan is the hottest team in the nation-- just one loss in its last 13 games aftrer some struggles at the end of the calendar year. Michigan is ranked fourth in the nation and could contend for the national title again after losing the title game last April. Shawn Hunwick has been terrific in goal and Michigan State will have to somehow solve him.
The Spartans are a work in progress and are inconsistent. But I like their goalie Will Yanakeff who has come up with big saves in tight games. After losing two at Ferris, MSU won two at Ohio State. So which MSU team will be featured Friday in Munn Arena and Saturday in Detroit at Joe Louis Arena? Munn will be rocking on Friday as it rarely is anymore-- but even for just the one game it will bring back memories of great games over seasons when the building was jammed night after night with enthusiastic fans. Whether that type of era ever returns again simply remains to be seen.
