In their 17-year history, the Lansing Lugnuts have sent many players on to the major leagues, even if they made other minor league stops along the way. But never have they sent a manger to the bigs-- until Thursday.
Way to go Mike Redmond. The Washington (state) native gets a three year deal to manage the Miami Marlins, who got rid of Ozzie Guillen last month. Redmond is 41 and his only season in Lansing was 2011 when he was named Midwest League manager of the year with a 77-60 record.
Redmond played 13 years in the major leagues including seven with the Marlins and he became good friends with the team's owner, Jeffrey Loria. Redmond managed this last season at the Toronto Blue Jays' class A affiliate at Dunedin, Florida.
