I would have only been surprised if William Gholston hadn't been suspended. Modern television technology did him in. There are too many cameras anymore and they see everything going on at these sporting events. Gholston was caught on camera and in slow motion, twisting Denard Robinson's face mask and slugging Taylor Lewand, albeit a retaliation punch. He was flagged for personal fouls and the Big Ten he simply violated the league's sportsmanship code.
So he won't play against Wisconsin and that will hurt MSU's chances. Gholston is a terrific player and getting better. He is a mild mannered kid in interviews and well spoken and he obviously plays with fervor on the field. But now MSU has lost him for a game against a team scoring 50 plus points per contest and you wonder can he be adequately replaced? Time will tell. For sure the rest of the Spartans can't commit 13 penalties against the Badgers like they did against Michigan. The college sportsmanship code, in my mind, is dramatically flawed, but who knows if it will ever be amended.
