Bob Every will be remembered by many down the road as someone who was a good boxing coach in Lansing and later a good coach of the softball team at Lansing Community College. But of far lasting impact may be his involvement with the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame.
He helped found it in 1976 and it was housed at Lansing Community College, where he was employed until last spring. He was let go and took the hall with him to the Lansing Center where it was re-dedicated on Thursday. It is a terrific location where traffic will be much better with more visibility for more people.
It now has memorabilia from many of the nearly 300 members enshrined over the years. The hall has struggled financially but Every's determination has kept it afloat to the point now where it has a bright future. And in July, it's possible the induction ceremonies for the 2012 class will include the presence of Magic Johnson and Muhsin Muhammad.
If Every had not stayed with the hall all these years, I'm not sure it would still be around today. Good for him and Lansing is better for the new shrine. Stop by and see it when you're downtown sometime.
