Early Big Ten Tourney Observations

The Big Ten men's basketball tournament now has two games in the books with nine more to play, concluding Sunday afternoon with the championship game finishing up just prior to the start of CBS's NCAA tournament pairings show.  No surprises early on-- Illinois and Iowa battled tooth and nail, but it's been an awful year for Illinois, a team that struggles to score.  Iowa has improved and the Hawkeyes survived 64-61 behind Matt Gatens' 20 points.  Iowa lost by 34 at East Lansing in January, but the Hawkeyes should offer a much stiffer challenge n the quarter-final match up with Michigan State which begins at noon on Friday.

Indiana cruised in the second half past Penn State, a team which ended the season with five straight losses.  Penn State and Nebraska are very undermanned to compete in the Big Ten and they both desperately need an infusion of talent.  Indiana next gets Wisconsin, a toughie for both on Friday.

Illinois has changed its football coach and women's basketball coach of late-- can men's basketball coach Bruce Weber be the next to go?  Stay tuned.
